by Quintana Roo Triathlon April 10, 2020

I was contacted on April 1st (April Fools Day) about the race. I was so happy it wasn't actually a joke! I think everyone was excited to be able to engage the triathlon community in an online, virtual format.

The format of this first race was to run 5km, bike 90km and run another 21km over a period of a few days. I did my 5k run on Friday afternoon when the time period started.

Saturday morning, race day for us female pros, I woke up oddly nervous! I think it was just because it was such a new race format that none of us were used to doing. While I was warming up for the ride my heart rate kept shooting up showing how nervous I really was.

The Bike Race

When we started, the nerves went away. Rinny and Angela both went out hard, and I was playing catch up. This bike portion was a lot different than what I am used to. We had 4 bike primes during the ride. I'm not used to having to put in higher efforts while steady riding.

It was very fun to be able to see where you were in the race the entire time and to have my family close by for the whole "race." It was different but still very fun and engaging!

I put in some huge efforts during those primes and hit my max heart rate on two of them!  While it was different than a typical race, it was incredibly fun! I was super excited to "walk away" with the win on the bike.

Virtual Racing

It's always key to have a good bike to ride, but I find it even more important on the trainer when you are pretty stationary and stagnant. I'm very grateful for my amazing PRsix Disc and the comfort that I get on my bike because of the great adjustability and customization available with Quintana Roo bikes.

I had a 21k run to do after the ride on Saturday which felt like running through mud! Fortunately I got to have my family on bikes for the first half of it. Hope to see some QR athletes out doing VR2 and maybe on Zwift sometime!
