Julie Bockey is not only a two-time IRONMAN finisher and Team Zoot athlete, she is also the mother of two sons, Jake and Christian, who both have autism. Julie and her husband, Shawn, are athletes with a lot of heart and strong advocates for autism awareness. They have started a movement with Team Zoot and the Autism Ohana cause, and we’re grateful to have joined the ride.
We partnered with Team Zoot’s Shawn O’Shea and Mark Goddard to give Julie the gift of a lifetime – a new Quintana Roo PRsix triathlon bike that matched her Austism Ohana racing kit. See Julie and Shawn’s reactions to the bike and what it stands for in the race for autism awareness.
Shawn O’Shea and Mark Goddard [of Team Zoot] reached out to me after the Autism Ohana collection launched stating Zoot wanted to surprise Julie with a custom PRsix triathlon bike. We corresponded with a few emails so I could provide fit measurements for the custom build.
One week prior, I knew the QR was coming and was able to pull off a complete surprise when it was delivered. This was not that easy with my son Jake who loves boxes and deliveries.
The night before, Mark Goddard sent a video message from Shawn O’Shea for Julie to watch after she opened the bike box. The thoughtfulness and generosity was overwhelming and I couldn’t wait to see the look on her face when she opened the box.
This custom bike was a complete surprise and the timing could not have been more perfect.
I was in the kitchen when my husband hollered to come outside. There sat a Quintana Roo box. As I questioned where it came from, I simultaneously started screaming as I could see the beautiful Matte Violet Autism Ohana triathlon bike sticking out of the box as I started opening it.
The autism puzzle pieces and ‘Autism Ohana’ decal really stood out to me. That was the name Shawn & Zoot presented to me for my racing kit and it certainly made us feel like a part of their triathlon family.
The bike was ready to go-minimal assembly and because my husband gave Zoot the measurements, the fit was perfect.
I’m extremely grateful to Quintana Roo and Zoot Sports for this custom build. I honestly find myself at a loss for words when I think of all the pieces that came together to make this custom triathlon bike. I’m extremely humbled, honored and proud to ride the Quintana Roo PRsix and represent Autism Ohana.
